Zaan Experiences

MUST DO — WANDER THROUGH DE RIJP & STAY FOR DINNER

Just a short drive from Black Swan, you’ll find De Rijp, one of those beautiful little Dutch villages that feels almost untouched by time.

Go in the late afternoon and simply wander. Walk along the little canals, admire the old wooden houses, tiny bridges and historic façades and take your time — De Rijp is small, so there is no need for a plan.

Then finish your walk with dinner at Het Wapen van Munster, one of my favourite places in the area. A cosy, atmospheric restaurant right in the historic centre, perfect for a long dinner after your walk.

My tip: go before sunset, walk around De Rijp first and then have dinner. A lovely little Dutch evening out.

ZAANSE SCHANS

MUST DO — WALK AROUND THE ZAANSE SCHANS & EAT BY THE ZAAN

Step into old Holland at the Zaanse Schans, just a short drive from Black Swan.

Yes, it is touristy — but it’s still worth a visit. Walk along the river past the traditional green wooden houses, historic windmills, little bridges and old workshops. It gives you a glimpse of what life in this part of Holland looked like centuries ago.

And make it extra special by stopping for lunch or dinner at De Hoop op d’Swarte Walvis. This beautiful restaurant is set in historic Zaanse buildings right on the river Zaan. Inside it still has that wonderful old-Dutch atmosphere, but my favourite place is outside on the terrace overlooking the water.

My tip: go early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the Zaanse Schans is quieter. Take a long walk along the windmills and finish with a drink, lunch or dinner at De Hoop op d’Swarte Walvis. Old Holland at its best — touristy, yes, but still lovely.
